Submit WhatsApp Template Messages
To send proactive messages such as alerts, OTPs, or promotions via WhatsApp, you need to create and submit a template message. These templates must be approved by Meta before they can be used in business-initiated conversations.
Prerequisites
Before submitting a template, confirm that:
- You have a WhatsApp Business Account (WABA).
- You hold the Admin role in Meta Business Manager.
- Your business has completed Meta Business Verification.
Steps to Create and Submit a Template
- Log in to Meta Business Manager.
- Go to Business Settings > WhatsApp Manager.
- Select your phone number and click on Message Templates.
- Click Create Template.
- Fill out the required fields:
- Category → Choose Transactional, OTP, Marketing, or Utility.
- Template Name → Use lowercase with underscores (e.g.,
order_update_2025). - Language → Select one or more supported languages.
- Message Body → Write your message. Use placeholders like
{{1}}for dynamic data. - Optional Fields → Add a header, footer, or call-to-action buttons (e.g., website link, quick reply).
- Review your template and click Submit.
After Submission
- Approved templates → Status will show as Active in WhatsApp Manager.
- Rejected templates → Status will show rejection reason (e.g., unclear placeholders, policy violation).
- Edits → Approved templates cannot be modified. To update, duplicate the template and resubmit.
Common Issues & Fixes
- Policy violations → Ensure compliance with Meta’s Messaging Policies.
- Incorrect placeholders → Wrap all dynamic fields in
{{ }}and provide clear context. - Low template quality → Avoid spammy content; keep messages clear, concise, and customer-friendly.
